John LennonThe handwritten lyrics by John Lennon for “A Day in the Life” that the Beatles recorded recently sold for $1.2 million at an auction. This is a track from the Sgt Pepper album that was released in 1967. This price for the lyrics was well beyond what was anticipated, with a top guess of $800,000.

The lyrics are on two sides of paper and also have various edits and corrections that Lennon placed on the written materials. There are lyrics on the paper that were never used, and it shows the changes that occurred to create the final draft that would become one of the Beatle’s top hits.

The lyrics are written with a blue pen, and than a black marker and a red pen were used for additions and corrections. The fact that the opening lines of the song – “I read the news today, oh boy” created a great deal of controversy is part of the reason why this is such a big part of history.

There are many lyrics to Beatles songs that have been under the microscope for a long period of time. Some of them are believed to have drug references but those are stories that Beatles members have long denied over the years. The identity of the buyer who placed the bid via phone for $1.2 million hasn’t been released.
