A 4 year old girl who was reported to be malnourished and drugged was killed by her mother as reported by the prosecutors in Brooklyn. The girl died in the month of September and was said to weigh 18 pounds at the time of her death.
Carlotta Brett – Pierce, the 30 year old accused mother was arrested on September 2 and has been in jail ever since. Incidentally, it had been her call to 911 which had reported the matter to the police when she told her daughter was not responding after losing her senses. A grand jury was held since July 12, which charged Ms. Brett of strapping her daughter to bed and physically assault her with household items and even did not provide food and water to her. In October, the mother was charged with a second degree assault adding to other charges of unlawful imprisonment. The medical examiner has termed the death of Marcella Brett – Pierce as a homicide and also reported chances of child abuse with poisoning as the cause of the death. Apart from these, dehydration and malnutrition due to depravation of food and water, some blunt injuries were the other probable causes of her death, as reported by the examiner.
Marcella had been born with under – developed lungs and thus had been admitted in hospitals very often due to her health problems. She even required a breathing tube when she came back from the hospital in February.
Her mother, Brett – Pierce, who is not new to drug problems is looking towards 25 years of imprisonment.
