Remember, Remember the 5th of November is the ditty ruling the net trends. Today is high voltage luminosity day with Guy Fawkes Day being celebrated, alongside Diwali ,the festival of lights in India, where Obama is headed to. Guy Fawkes Day commemorates the failure of the daring Gunpowder Plot of 1605 spear headed by Guy or Guido Fawkes. This was a bid to derail the Protestant rule of King James I in England by blowing up the Parliament . The conspirators felt that given the systematic oppression of English Catholics, this was an explosive way to get even. Sedition and fireworks apart, Alan Moore’s graphic novel has made Guy Fawkes an anti-establishment folk hero. Fawkes got captured on November 5,1605. Alan Moore’s ‘V for Vendetta’ is now creating a buzz in the blogosphere. There will be giant bonfire celebrations and Guy Fawkes effigies in the UK, and also Indian expats will get together to celebrate Diwali. And the famous poem has gained currency today, so here we go “Remember, remember the fifth of November/ The gunpowder treason and plot.” It goes on ” I know of no reason/ Why the gunpowder treason/ Should ever be forgot” Had the homegrown bid to blow up Parliament succeeded, it would have seen King James I, the aristocrats and the swish set inside go up in smoke. Catholics faced vituperative persecution in Protestant England, and there used to be witch hunts to pin down those who practised Catholicism in secret. Image Credit: |
