At Churchill Downs this Saturday Big Drama emerged victor with a big win. The 4-year-old recorded a time of 1:09.05 in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint with a $2 million prize up for grabs. Big Drama crowned jockey Eibar Coa and David Fawkes the trainer with first ever Breeders Cup wins. Big Drama beat off competition from second-placed Hamazing Destiny and third-placed Smiling Tiger. Among the bookies, Big Drama was tipped as a choice favourite second only to Girolama and the 4-year-old did not disappoint. Paying $12.40 to win, Big Drama raked in the moolah for jockey Eibar Coa and David Fawkes. When it came to the Juvenile Turf, it was Pluck who came from behind for a nail-biting win. The plucky contender took for owners the $1 million prize. The timing read 1:36.98 for one mile. To win, Pluck paid $14.80. Garrett Gomez who is Pluck’s jockey and Todd Pletcher the trainer have proved to be a winsome combo this year. Together they have swept the stakes through every juvenile turf race with ease. This year’s competition was totally dominated by the duo. Behind Pluck, Willcox Inn and Soldat rounded out the top three places. Rough Sailing had a rough outing when the horse took an early lead in the race but unfortunately fell on the first turn. The saving grace was that Rosie Napravnik, Rough Sailing’s jockey walked away unhurt from the fall. The horse had a tragic incident when it had to be euthanized owing to a broken shoulder. Time for a PETA campaign. Calvin Borel fight and ruckus-making also made Breeder’s Cup news. |
