Blessing in Disguise: Iraqi Gas

The natural gas in Iraq could be the country’s blessing in disguise. This is according to reports from an energy analyst.

Iraq Gas

To develop its gas resource the country advertised an auction for the commodity. To the amazement of many only two of the three advertised auctions went through with the third failing completely.

The reasons for this were all politically motivated. The clearest indication of this was testified by the failed auction of the Anbar province which has gas fields. The province was previously known to be the home of Sunni-led insurgents. Times have changed and the former insurgents have transformed themselves into an American-funded paramilitary force having fighters from the loyal tribes in the province.

The Iraqi media has been observing the events in the Iraq gas sector closely to come up with the conclusions.

The failed auction was actually due to failed talks with the provincial elders with the government officials.

There are many energy companies willing and able to invest in the gas sector in Iraq but have failed to do so simply because the political leaders have been involved in power sharing talks to be able to form the government. This took a whole eight months after elections were held back in March.

The New regime has claimed to have made great strides in having the Iraq energy projects back on track, but to many this is simply not the case as it is made up of more or less the same people who were in it long before the elections were conducted.
