Four Loko is emerging as a headache for law enforcers on campuses like Harvard, Boston College and Northeastern, after many college students had to be hospitalized after drinking the deadly brew of alcohol laced with a jolt of caffeine. Several students in New Jersey and Washington were ill after a shot of the popular alcoholic energy drink that is increasingly becoming a regular “blackout shot” that college students crave. Director of health services in universities at Boston College warned that Four Loko posed serious health risks and that the concoction had deadly side effects. ‘Blackout in a can’ Four Loko is alarming officials on campuses, who say that owing to the sweet taste, students ignore the high alcohol content of Four Loko and indulge in binge drinking more often than not. Students are in the danger of being drunk blotto without being aware of it. While students are being to abstain by the likes of Madeleine Estabrook, who is a health counsellor at Northeastern University, manufacturers Phusion Projects of Four Loko pointed to safe antecedents like Irish coffee and concoctions of rum and cola that have been tried and tested. They say that the content of caffeine and alcohol have been fixed at a percentage which is deemed safe . Madeleine Estabrook said that Four Loko causes the wide-awake drunk syndrome, when students think that their cognitive abilities are still sharp and are up for tasks like driving or crossing a thoroughfare. This illusory notion that you are sober is the cause of many a tragic accidents. |
