Columbus Day is celebrated in the memory of Christopher Columbus, who according to the Europeans discovered America. Every year the second Monday of October is celebrated as Columbus Day, this year that being on October 11. Some banks and offices remain closed on this day providing party time and vacation to many people while others remain open. So the obvious question in everyone’s mind is whether banks are open on that day.
Some banks remain open on this day in spite of Columbus Day being considered to be a “bank holiday”.
The most convenient way to be sure of this is by visiting the institution’s website and going through the holiday list.
However, some of the notification about the status of some of the banks and offices in America are:-
BANKS : Some of the nation’s biggest banks like Bank of America, Citibank and US Bank will be closed while Chase Bank and Wells Fargo / Wachovia will remain open serving customers.
All Financial markets will remain closed.
Government offices-city, state and federal all will remain closed.
Courts and all U.S. post offices will be closed.
Garbage will not be collected, neither recycling will be done. The normal garbage collection from households will be done on Tuesday instead of Monday while recyclables will be picked up next week.
Parking meters will be in effect but City Parking Violations Bureau and State Department of Motor Vehicles will be closed.
Colleges like St. John’s, CSI and Wagner will remain closed. However, the mass transport like buses, trains and ferry will follow their weekday schedule.
