Cranberry Relish is essentially a sauce, used as an accompaniment to the main course, but it’s
a must have at Thanksgiving. It is usually prepared in combination with other fruits like orange,
apple or pear. The main ingredient remains cranberry. At this time of the year cranberry is found in
abundance in the US. The sauce made from it, is delicious when had with turkey preparations.
Just as Thanksgiving is to America so is Christmas to UK. In UK as well cranberry relish is a popular
food accompaniment. There is a difference is taste preference depending on the locations. In Europe
it is preferred a bit sour, while the Americans prefer it sweet. There are a variety of combinations in
which this sauce can be prepared.
Cranberry relish is easily available in the market. The texture may either be jellied or uncondensed.
The jellied substance usually takes the shape of the container when removed. It can then be cut
into whichever size and shape one chooses to. It may often contain gelatine. Even though cranberry
sauce is traditionally used as an accompaniment with turkey, it is so popular, that it enjoys the
class of a complete dish in itself. It is only with the combination of turkey that cranberry relish is
consumed.
Though the readymade version available, one can add personal touches if the relish is prepared at
home. A variety of ingredients like maple syrup, zest, ginger, slivered almonds and cinnamon can be
added to enhance the taste. It can be very easily prepared but putting the main ingredients in a food
processor and grinding it according to ones preferences. The enhancers can then be added as per
taste preferences. It should be served chilled and can be refrigerated up to 4 days.
