President Obama invited Russian president Dmitry Medvedev to a surprise American lunch Thursday before returning to the White House for a news conference. As tension with Iran grows daily, Israel launched a new satellite on Tuesday. This is capable of high resolution surveillance to monitor Iran’s nuclear program. It is called Ofek 9 (Horizon 9), one of six spy satellites that were launched by Israel and it is made by Elbit, a leading Israeli high-tech optics firm. Weighing 650 pounds, it is small in comparison to U.S. spy satellites and it will orbit Earth from up to 600 km.

Hurricane Celia, the first of the 2010 Pacific season, increased Wednesday into a major Category 3 on the one-to-five Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale. On June 20 Celia was growing as a tropical storm, with powerful thunderstorms in the southwest quarter of the storm.

The London Telegraph has reported General Stanley McChrystal has submitted his resignation to the White House. He plans to retire according to the comments McChrystal has made. He recently spoke to Rolling Stone Magazine. During that interview he criticized both his own boss and the entire Obama administration for insubordination.
