Over eight years after her terrifying ordeal, Elizabeth Smart appears on federal trial Monday to bring her abductor to book. Brian David Mitchell is to be prosecuted for kidnapping and raping the teenager and then illegally moving her across state lines. Elizabeth Smart has flown in from France to face her attacker in court, where she was on a Christ for Latter-day Saints Church mission. Her father said that justice has been delayed too long but was confident that street preacher Brian David Mitchell will be convicted for his despicable crime. 57 year old Mitchell abducted Elizabeth Smart on June 5, 2002 threatening to knife her to death. He kidnapped her at night from Smart’s Salt Lake City residence and ultimately transported her to San Diego. The 14 year old’s ordeal lasted a nightmarish 9 months when Mitchell would rape the captive minor everyday. Elizabeth Smart testified last year that the predator of children in priest garb would feed her garbage about how he was ‘a prophet’ and ‘God’s voice’ and that until the millennium arrived when Jesus came , Mitchell would ‘reign over God’s children’. Wanda Eileen Barzee, the estranged wife of Mitchell who has now turned approver after pleading guilty, revealed that an attempt to kidnap the 15-year-old cousin of Smart was in the offing, just a month after Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped, but got foiled. Rescue arrived for Smart after a spotting in Utah. The paedophile priest Brian David Mitchell now faces a life sentence in jail. |
