Researchers at the National Research Center in Cairo, Egypt have released a statement saying that flax seed oil may help reduce the risk of osteoporosis or bone loss.

This was after they did an analysis of the blood and urine of 70 female rats that included some with diabetes. They also included some that had had their ovaries taken out so as to simulate post menopause. Controls were put in place to the effect that some did not have flax seed oil added to their diet.

Mer Harvi, part of the research team stated that by adding flax seed oil to their diet, the concentrations of serum insulin-like growth factor 1 and the bone-creating protein, osteocalcin were enhanced.

Also, there were higher levels deoxypyridinoline in the urine, which indicates the bone being reabsorbed since healthy bone contains deoxypyridinoline.

The researchers recommended further investigations on the effect of using flax seed oil to help reduce the chances of bone loss and improve bone health.

The report was published in the International Journal of Food Safety, Nutrition and Public Health.
