Flights Cancelled In Europe Due to Volcanic Ash

AirportIn Europe today, flights were cancelled by the thousands due to a huge volcanic ash cloud moving across the continent. Along with flights being cancelled airspace was restricted or closed. On Friday Eurocontrol stated in parts of Europe especially central and north and England were still closed due to the volcanic ash. That is about two-thirds of Europe.

In Europe over half the flights were cancelled. This is more than the previous day. Sixty flights going to and from Asia were also cancelled. About one-hundred and twenty trans flights made it through. Ash from the volcano can get into the engine of the plane and damage it. Also, the ash can reduce visibility for flying.

On Friday the ash continued to move across Europe from Iceland. For twenty-four hours air traffic control will monitor the situation. The volcano that is causing all this mess is coming from underneath a glacier in Iceland, the Eyjafjaliajokull. This is the second time it has erupted in a month.

This weekend the British Prime Minister was planning to go to Poland, but travel plans are questionable now.
