President Mahmoud Abbas has said the only time that they, Palestine, will return to peace talks with Israel is when there is a complete building freeze in East Jerusalem and West Bank. Contentious East Jerusalem The country is confident of having not only the U.S. support but also the world’s and most importantly a majority of the Israeli population. The problem is fueled by the fact that Israel is involved in talks with the U.S. which are said to have stalled or moving at a very slow pace. The U.S is yet to invite the Palestine back to the peace talks which collapsed in September simultaneous with the end of the building freeze in East Jerusalem and the West Bank. The Palestine is hopeful of peace talks in the near future. In the mean time, however, Palestinians are to meet with the Arab League foreign ministerial negotiations in a couple of days and give their insight on the matter. On their part the Israelites are more than ready to have a 90- day construction freeze only if East Jerusalem is excluded from the list and have made steps in this direction by limiting the issuance of building permits in the area. The area of East Jerusalem is leading the controversy because the Palestine say it was snatched from them in 1967 by the Israeli regime. As part of the deal to have the peace talks back on track the Israeli are to have a settlement freeze in West Bank and in return the Palestine are not to declare independence and in the process be given arsenal from the US government. This is the best incentive to the Palestine yet but have said they will not accept it. They say they were never involved in the negotiations. The most important thing is that both states are ready for peace talks and that is such a big leap forward. Image Credit: |
