General Norman Johnson, the lead singer of the popular band “Chairmen of the Board” died yesterday at the age of 67.
General Johnson started singing at a very young age. At 6, he joined the church choir and at 12, he recorded his debut album. He was a resident of Rayleigh in North Carolina where the band Chairmen of the Board originated and started composing a type of music which they termed as beach music. But they achieved real success and became famous when they moved over to Detroit.
The Chairmen of the Board band originated in 1967 and in the year 1976 it dissolved. Johnson was the lead vocalist and the song writer of the band. “Give Me Just a Little More Time” is one of their most famous singles released at the end of 1969. It soared to #3 in the rankings of the Billboard hot 100 chart and over a million copies were sold.
The other popular singles which made the music band famous are “You’ve Got Me Dangling on a String”, “Elmo James”, “Finders Keepers”, “Everything’s Tuesday” and “Pay to the Piper”.
No official statement regarding the cause of the death was known, but tomorrow General Johnson’s son, Red and the long time Chairmen of the Board band mate Ken Knox are scheduled to speak. They are to be present at noon EST on a radio show tomorrow.
All the fans of General Johnson would be praying his soul rests in peace.
