There are two places called Georgia, one is a state in the Unite States of America, however, this is all about the Georgia which is a country neighboring the country of Russia, Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan. This is a sovereign situated in Europe on the coast of the Black sea. The country has a population of not less than 4.6 million and has an area of 69,700 km2. National Flag of Georgia The country has a democratic system of government and is also a member of some organizations like the United Nations, the Council of Europe, World Trade Organization and the Asian Development Bank. It was among the first countries to have Christianity adopted and was as its peak in the political and economic power in the reign of King David and Queen Tamar. In the beginning of the 19th century, right from being under the Roman Empire the country was consequently under the Soviet Red army rule in 1921. It was later to break away from the U.S.S.R. when the body disintegrated in 1991 and got back independence in the same year on the 6th of April. The country is made up of two independent regions, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which it views as occupied by Russia. In 1994, Georgia and the Russia Federation signed a treaty that gave the later authority to keep three military bases in the country and at the same time train and equip the Georgian military. The UK and the USA, in 1998, had an operation aimed at removing all soviet era of exploiting material in the nation. The US trained the Georgia Army, in 2002, in antiterrorism measures to try and water down the rebels involved in war in the country. The Georgian and Russian nations have been involved in tensions on the lawless region of Pankisi Gorge, Russia is seen to be a haven for Islamic hardcore. A war broke out in 2008 between Georgia and the two states that make it, South Ossetia and that of Abkhazia. There were hundreds of troops from the Russian Federation in support of the rebel regions and went as far as launching airstrikes in their support. Many observers saw this as an attempt by the Federation of Russia to try and take away Georgia’s export routes for oil and gas. By the end of the month, a cease-fire agreement was entered between the two states, Georgia and Russia, after the cease fire agreement the government of Russia recognized the break away region of south Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent states and got diplomatic tie with the country. No nation took responsibility for the war. Russian troops have remained stationed in the regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia under an agreement between the two governments. Image Credit: Georgia |
