The all-new AMC series ‘The Walking Dead’ made its gory debut in the evening entertainment slot with a Sunday night premiere. Get set for zombies to invade your living room with the series that is based on a comic book.

‘The Walking Dead’ follows survivors who have lived through the zombie apocalypse. The series is not for the faint hearted as scenes include a violent gore fest where zombies devour a horse. The 2003 comic book is famed for its compelling stories but never lets up on a shocking dose of violence.

Central characters of ‘The Walking Dead’ undergo significant mutations in the course of the series. The show tries to bring back zombies as a metaphor and symbol, from the brain-washed masses, to deadened workers shuffling aimlessly after a hard day’s night.

The series is high on the emotional quotient of various zombie clichés like stumbling upon a reanimated beloved, but episode two is laudable for its muted and subtle intensity which does not get screechy. Episode one and two aired back to back and responses from audiences and critics have largely been favourable, with ‘The Walking Dead’ comic book buffs liking the dialed-down intensity of the second episode.

The series is unapologetically ultra-violent, given that it lives on a cable station. But emotional power sustaining the show or not, fans might just face an attack from the moral police. Giving the ubiquity of gore on the web, ‘The Walking Dead’ may not be too hard to stomach.
