Gregory Isaacs, the reggae music legend died today morning of lung cancer in London at his home. He was 59 years old. Isaacs became a legend while delivering an unending collection of international hits between the 70s and 80s. He became an instant hit with his seductive and slinky reggae subgenre lovers rock. He is better known for his love songs sung in an unusually smooth tone.
Isaacs started his career as a teenager on the Jamaican talent show circuit. In 1968 he released a duet with Winston Sinclair named “Another Heartbreak”. He then joined the Concords, the vocal trio. But his career took off after he went solo breaking away from the Concords in the 70s. He launched a record store of his own and label African Museum.
Isaac’s first hit was released in 1973 named “My Only Lover” which he produced himself. In the next few years Isaac released a string of hits. He also featured in the film Rockers in 1978 as a locksmith and later performed in his song “Slave Master”.
However, his biggest hit came with the classic seducing “Night Nurse” in 1982. Isaac had to deal with plenty of obstacles in his music career. He was sentenced to six-month imprisonment for possessing an unlicensed gun. Iconic tracks like “Rumours” also helped his career to move in the right track. In the 80s he faced many arrests and problems related to drug. However, in spite of all these problems he continued to be an incredible hit among his fans.
