An unidentified gunman opened fire inside the University of Texas library, as the latest incident of gun rage hit an American campus early Tuesday. Armed with an assault rifle and muffled in a ski mask, the suit-clad man later shot himself dead, a source reported UT police spokeswoman Rhonda Weldon as saying. The campus was sealed when several rounds of gunshots were heard on the sixth floor of the erudition crammed Perry-Castaneda Undergrad Library. No casualties have been reported so far, though law Professor Randall Wilhite was shot at on the way to work in the morning with classes getting cancelled subsequently. Students report that he is unharmed. Those trapped inside were asked to keep doors shut and curfew was temporarily imposed on campus with students and faculty frantically on the phone to make sure friends were safe. Police are now on the lookout for a possible second culprit with a gun. Swat teams have ensured a campus lockdown and are combing the site with sniffer dogs for the supposed second shooter who could be at large after two different descriptions of the shooter emerged from witnesses. The dead gunman was clad in an all-black outfit, and had access to an automatic weapon. Twitterers say the second gunman is locked in the chemistry building. UT Police Chief Robert Dahlstrom said at a media briefing that shots were fired from a second location, adding clout to the second shooter angle. The news of the gunman’s death was confirmed by Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo. The ironic twist is that John Lott — author of the book titled More Guns, Less Crime — was scheduled to give a talk before the Federalist Society today. Bound to have few takers now. |
