After Dan Radcliffe aka Harry Potter ditched his teen wizard robes to appear in the buff for Peter Shaffer’s Equus, now it is Miley Cyrus’s turn to come of age. Her latest music video “Who Owns My Heart?” has enraged parents with her clean teen icon turned dishy diva act. The video has the 17-year-old writhing blindfolded in the bedroom clad in lingerie, before heading to a club. TMZ reported that the Parents Television Council felt that it was saddening that Cyrus appeared in a sexualized video like “Who Owns My Heart?” that sends out mixed messages to a fan base that consists largely of tweens. The Parents Council roundly criticized her for riding to fame on the backs of her kiddie Disney-fed fans, and doing a volte-face when she had arrived, with President Tim Winter annoyed at her show-me-the-money act. Looking at girl pop careers though, the transition was in the offing for a while now, remember Britney with her 16 year old saucy schoolgirl act? And Miley Cyrus was never Natalie Portman, so the progression to raunchy diva was logical, no one expects her in an avant garde avatar. And the Vanity Fair photo shoot and the skimpy outfit at the MuchMuch Awards were a taste of things to come. With the shelf life of teen pop stars pretty fragile, Miley better grab the eyeballs while she still can. The hooter came when he told MTV that her video is about “empowering females.” Up next: lap-dancers run for President. |
