The Hurricane Tomas brought about torrential rains with it which have led the epidemic disease of cholera to spread like wildfire in Haiti. Supplies were brought over by many medical workers over the weekend and efforts are being made to prevent this deadly disease.
Many people have been identified to have been drinking water from the river which contains the bacteria causing cholera. In such a situation, control of the disease becomes tough since these people are too poor to buy water in bottles.
The cholera that has broken out now in Haiti has affected around 7,000 unfortunate beings in the last two and a half weeks resulting in the death of around 500 of them. This outbreak is largely confided in areas where the water presents itself to be the main source of livelihood.
However, these facts received a jolt on Friday when heavy showers accompanied Hurricane Tomas with it. The medical teams present to take care of the situation are finding it extremely difficult to stop the general public to prevent drinking the dirty unhygienic water lacking sanitation. This river known as the Artibonite River is also believed to contain germs which cause the disease and leads to contamination.
Since Friday, the number of cases that have been reported has greatly increased. Doctors even expressed their fears the recent flooding will aggrandize and will lead to many more patients affected to this disease and will speed up the outbreak of this epidemic. Suspected cases are dreaded to increase as many confuse cholera with other diseases like diarrhea which also takes the life of the patient when not treated.
