INIA BOLIVIENSIS: THE FAMOUS PINK DOLPHIN

“Amazon” is the biggest rainforest in the world and is known to host the biggest diversity of animals. It still presents itself as the safest home for all animals according to the report “Amazon Alive! A Decade of Discoveries 1999 – 2009” which was published by WWF (World Wildlife Fund) on Tuesday. In this decade, around 1,200 new species have been discovered in this green dense region which includes plants and vertebrates.
The article tells us about the discovery of 637 species of plants along with 257 varieties of fish, 216 types of amphibians, 55 breeds of reptiles, 39 species of mammals and 16 species of birds. Inia Boliviensis is one of the cutest discoveries that have been done in the last decade. It is a species of dolphin found in the Amazon. This is known as the pink river dolphin which has a unique figure with a circular head and a pink nose. Initially scientists thought it to be a subspecies of Inia Geoffrensis which is a different species of dolphin found in this region. This species has a wider, rounder and smaller body, a smaller head and more teeth. Dolphins have always come across as lovable and friendly mammals.
This new species has become famous after the publication of the article “Amazon Alive! A Decade of Discoveries 1999 – 2009”. Pyrilia Aurantiocephala, bald headed parrot, huge catfish are some of the other interesting animals that have been mentioned in the article and as a result more and more people are getting to know about these articles.
