Veteran Jerry Brown is all set to be California’s governor, in a respite for Democrats facing a Republican rout in the House. Though all the votes had not yet been counted, the gubernatorial race in California is firmly titled in Jerry Brown’s favour. The 72-year-old looked the new king of the hill as he swanned around with typical charisma at the Oakland Fox Theater, and accepted the win as the governor-elect at around 11 pm, saying the victory margin was already clear enough “for government work”. The Meg Whitman camp is in a huddle. California election results are creating a buzz owing to the high voltage debate around Prop 19.The new governor of the state hoped that the win would serve as a breakthrough, given the situation of breakdown for which he he held the Republicans responsible. The Jerry Brown charisma overrode the prevalent anti-incumbent mood, and California played by the book, in accord with a historic trend that has seen golden oldie officeholders rule the roost and brash political novices and first-timers relegated to the trash bin. Republican Meg Whitman must be crying all the way to the bank, as she blew a whopping $141 million from her personal fund, a record for campaign spending .Looks like California went for the tried and tested option, with Jerry Brown having held the guv position decades ago. While Meg Whitman came across as a cold billionaire who reportedly threw out an immigrant domestic help, Jerry Brown rode his quirky charisma and luck. |
