Looking for a Fix On Mistakes Baseball Umpires Make

Baseball GameHave you ever watched a baseball game and know the umpire made a mistake and your favorite team then loses the game? That is the controversy brewing over the modernizers and the traditionalists. The traditionalists want to go back to simple human error, and the modernizers want a replay.

Baseball games are getting longer because the umpires have to stop the game and look at the replay machine. With Wednesday’s disastrous game, would this have changed the outlook of the game with all the mistakes that were called by the umps?

In the next few weeks these ideas will be discussed. The main concern is making calls at first base. On first base around 30% of the game’s outs are recorded here.

First base umpires are required to hear the ball land in the player’s glove, use his eyes, and listen to the runner’s foot hitting the base to determine if it was an out or not. After Wednesday’s game, a veteran umpire can have a hard time making these calls as they are usually made at high speeds.

A baseball advisor to the Red Sox states there maybe technology in place that would no longer require umpires in the future. Possibly through sensors in gloves, balls, or fences for example.

For now, in the major league ballparks there are installed digital cameras to record the pitches and can also determine how fast a player is moving. This technology could be joined together to prove more efficient in the coming seasons.
