Mexican Convicted for Human Smuggling and Sex Trafficking in Atlanta

In the latest blow to the fight against sex slavery, Amador Cortez-Meza was convicted by a federal jury on 19 counts of sex trafficking and human slavery. The 36-year old Mexican was said to have smuggled girls from Mexico to Atlanta in the state of Georgia through bus drivers. According to a statement by prosecutors involved in the case, he then forced them to engage in sexual activities with clients at night.

The victims he preyed on have a common characteristic; they are young and have big dreams. These were his primary targets since they were the easiest to convince of the promise of good jobs and marriage. Cortez-Meza then isolated the young women from their relatives and then brutally mistreated them, all the while threatening to kill the rest of their families back in Mexico. This was confirmed by the statements of victims who testified against him in the Atlanta court.

In a statement by Sally Quillian Yates, the USA Attorney said that the convict subjected the girls to physical torture, slavery and forced prostitution.

The jury which took one day to reach a verdict, found him guilty as charged and he now awaits sentencing. It is expected that he will receive a life-imprisonment sentence.
