Charlotte Motor Speedway, NASCAR , NC, had a giant sinkhole, causing those concerned a lot of headache. The sinkhole which developed beside a backstretch of a race course near a camping area was amazingly built over a landfill. The appearance of the sinkhole was classified as a small disaster but there happen to be a funny side to the whole story as well. There have been a few discoveries, for a start. Interesting Finds on the Giant Sinkhole in October Relics that date as old as more than thirty years of age were some of the things found in the very hole. Some of the interesting things found here was “The Charlotte News” newspaper that was written on the 16th of July, 1977. “North Korea Releases Crewman” and the movie review on “Star Wars” were two of the major headlines together with a segment on an actor, Harrison Ford, who was unknown at the time. Also found were a step ladder and 2 liter glass bottle of cola at the site. The sinkhole on the NASCAR lane made headlines as it was formed as a result of Tropical Storm Nicole that was poured in the region. The heavy down pour together with the fact that the area was on a landfill are said, and for a good reason, to be the main reason why the behind the development of the hole. In the contrary, it was discovered that the area had an underneath pipe that deteriorated and could not support the weight above. The pipe had been in the place for more than thirty years and its collapse was the major factor that led to the formation of the sinkhole. Majority of NASCAR use the speedway track, and it draws so many of fans annually. Thus, commission on the sinkhole was not an option, filling it was a top priority at the time. Image Credit: |
