Obama in an Unprecedented Move

President Barack Obama is so upbeat on the treaty arms with Russia and wants the deal done soonest possible, advising the Senate to act before the Congress goes on recess.

The president is confident of surpassing where other presidents starting from Ronald Reagan have failed, and was sure of winning the needed numbers to have the law passed.

To show the seriousness of the matter and to push the Senate to support him, president Obama surrounded himself with former security chiefs and stressed the fact that the US should not let this golden opportunity pass. The treaty concerns itself with the ability to verify Russia’s nuclear weapons.

The other thing pushing Washington is the fact that they want to have Russia’s support on other matters of national interest especially on the war on Iraq in the fear they are making nuclear weapons.

While in Roosevelt Room, the president asked Politicians not to politicize the issue as it was a serious matter of national security and they needed to move with speed.

The president was sure the time was ripe for the treaty to be passed and further delays or sideshows would not be encouraged, even as some Republicans said the issue should be given more time and deeper thoughts.

Asked if he was sure of the treaty going to go through, he said he was confident of winning the needed numbers to have the treaty ratified by the Senate.

Former secretaries who accompanied the president in the press conference included Madeleine Albright, James Baker and Henry Kissinger. The defense secretaries present in the function were William Cohen, William Perry and the former National Security Adviser Brent Scowcroft.
