Obama picks the tab for shellacking

President Barack Obama in his press conference conceded the ’shellacking’ Democrats received in the polls and took responsibility for the election day debacle. The 12-feet high mound of pumpkins in the White House on Halloween was a taste of the spooky times to come for the Democrats. Barack Obama seemed to strike a conciliatory tone after the sweeping losses and said that he would negotiate with victorious Republican leaders who took control of the House, on issues such as education, tax-cut extensions and energy. Obama admitted that the Democrats had lost the pulse of the people on whose backs they rode to power, in a widespread anti-incumbency mood where discontent with the economy and employment opportunities was rife. His knack for catchwords remained unflappable, and his chutzpah was on display even amid the ruins. Obama said that he personally would never recommend that future White House officeholders would take a shellacking like he was subject to on election result night. The GOP tide swept the carpet from under Democrat feet as the victoties in the House of Representatives, governorship and state legislatures all saw Republicans in Tea Pary mood. The Senate was salvaged from the ruins by Democrats, but the whopping gain of more than 60 House seats was an unprecedented GOP feat. Now it is a battle of nerves and will as a hostile Republican House looks to punch-out White House policies. How the two will work in tandem, despite Obama’s promise to negotiate, is a question. |
