There is an estimated 71 million vials of H1N1 vaccine that will be thrown away if not used soon. With the Southeast showing an increase in the flu, officials are warning that the season is not through yet. The Washington Post stated that half of the purchased doses have been given out. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that some vaccines would be wasted. They were quoted as saying, “We had a pandemic. We wanted to make sure we had enough to go around. We had to protect Americans.” In February health officials think about eighty-one to ninety-one million vials of the H1N1 vaccine were administered. So far an estimated 12,000 people have died from the H1N1 along with an estimated 265,000 having to be treated and hospitalized. With all the uncertainty of the H1N1 virus at the beginning to now, it shows the country did a great job in responding to this crisis. |
