John Boehner, house minority leader might be ecstatic about the ‘Pledge to America’ but as expected, not everyone is. Most Liberals are not up beat about the plan by the Republicans towards fixing the country that was unveiled on Thursday. Conservative pundits are responding to the pledge differently with some thinking the ‘Pledge to America’ is just another toothless document that will only elicit heated arguments. The document is being blasted for having a lot of words but no specified and feasible long-term solutions to issues. For instance, when it comes to issues pertaining to immigration, the pledge is very brief. What it advocates is border control, visa security enforcement and strengthening of existing immigration laws. Elections: Pledge for House Control? What was widely absent in the pledge is a way under which illegal immigrants who are already in the U.S. could be legalized. While the 21-page document hardly takes the initiative to come up with incisive and specific recommendations, it hints at some that will surely infuriate groups concerned with immigration rights. One of these is the establishment of border operational control. However, in terms of talking points, the ‘pledge to America’ gives Republicans some crucial leads. These include cutting government spending and slashing taxes. The pledge was released at a period when the midterm elections are near, perhaps hoping to aid in winning as much Congress slots as possible. The Pledge is seen as trying to follow the shadow of the “Contract with America’ released by GOP in 1994, which was very categorical on the plan to follow on Congress supremacy. In 1994, the control of the House shifted to the Republicans. Image Credit: |
