![]() ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS Protesters intentionally interrupted the 2011 All Star Game being played in Phoenix by jumping onto the field temporarily stopping the Western Nationals and Arizona Diamondbacks baseball game on Sunday. The protest was a result of the various political restraints due to the new immigration laws recently put in place in Arizona. The protestors were able to elude security guards for several minutes, but were eventually subdued and escorted out of the area. This wasn’t before fans brought out their camera’s and video taped the entire incident which was later uploaded onto YouTube where it shows security guards chasing a woman around the outfield and another protestor is seen running on the field away from security. The protestors were being booed during these events by the fans but they did cheer loudly when security captured them. Before the game, the protestors had been busy handing out fliers to fans before they entered to watch the game. Even though these efforts were bold and challenging, there are many officials that want to see the game moved as well. Among them are advocates for the rights of Hispanics. Right now the laws in Arizona allow for police to verify that they are a citizen of the United States or here legally at any time. However, many feel this type of check is nothing more than racial profiling. Only recently a Federal judge placed an injunction on many parts of the Arizona law that are being debated. This occurred only one day before it was to be passed. At this time police aren’t able to question the status of people but the state is going to fight through an appeal. The scenario will most likely end up before the United States Supreme Court. a legal escalation that some expect will end up before the U.S. Supreme Court. Image Credit: |
