Sam Waterston, of Law and Order fame, had a memorable outing in the Rally to Restore Sanity by Comedy Central duo Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. The lawyer made a surprise appearance after Father Sarducci had set the stage with his prayer. The distinguished gent with silver hair, Sam Waterston read out a hilarious “Mein Poem”, in a full-on movie trailer voice.

The tempo was insanely funny , as were the lyrics “”Someone’s robbing your house/ and I can see through your blouse”. The limerick went on ” Your mother was right/ you chose the wrong spouse.” As if there is that rare breed of right spouses . Sam Waterston took his turn after Stephen Colbert appeared in a leather jacket and star-spangled pants to announce his original self-written poem. The madcap rhyme was read out by reasonable-seeming man Sam Waterston.

The Rally to Restore Sanity in Washington D.C turned out to be three hours of revelry with a surprise appearance by basketball luminary Kareem Abdul Jabbar, and star-studded performances. Yusuf Islam aka Cat Stevens sang Peace Train, that was hijacked by Ozzy Osbourne . Crooner Tony Bennett, Sheryl Crow , Kid Rock and R&B star John Legend added punch to the fight against religious intolerance.

The fear factor triumph moment was a take on the harrowing ordeal of Chilean miners trapped underground for over two months. Colbert finally emerged in superhero costume from his entrapment “in my fear bunker huddle , beneath 2,000 feet of rock”.
