San Francisco Marathon first results will be known very soon. In the mean time the competitors are still running along their long route, being motivated by different causes. Unlike the marathons in New York or Chicago, which draw around of 40,000 participants each, stimulated by attractive prizes, here most of the athletes run for charity.
However, as a USA Track & Field road running event, the San Francisco Marathon is a qualifying race for the Boston Marathon and they are hundreds or even thousands of competitors targeting this goal.
But many people are here today for their own pleasure and health and they are the real winners. Despite the recession, there is a new running boom, so that in 2009 there was 475 different marathons in the U.S. establishing an all-time record of 467,000 finishers.
Coming back to San Francisco Marathon results and records we can say that 7231 finishers were registered here in 1983 and the best time results was performed by Simon Kigen from Kenya, who has ran along the SF Marathon route in 2 hours 10 minutes and 18 seconds in August 9, 1984.
The standard distance for the modern marathon race was set at a distance of 26.22 miles, but initially this was around of one mile shorter. The first marathon event was founded in commemoration of the legendary performance of Pheidippides, a the Greek messenger, who has ran from the Battle of Marathon to Athens, which took place in 490 BC. A special 2500 year anniversary party of the Original Greek Marathon will take place today at Mile 25 of San Francisco Marathon.
