SHAWNE MERRIMAN: STINT WITH CHARGER ENDS

Shawne Merriman’s memorable stint with Chargers ended on Wednesday when he was relegated to the injury reserve on the basis of a “minor injury” designation. He is nursing a calf injury and will be released once he is healthy.

Being on Injury Reserve enables him to sign with any team even in this season but for that he has to recover and be healthy. Merriman has won the Pro Bowler and All Pro award thrice but he has been struggling since his knee injury in 2008. Since then a series of knee, foot and calf injuries has prevented him to produce successful performances on field registering four sacks in the last two seasons.

In spite of his poor performances in the last three seasons, he can still prove to be a real asset if he can regain his fitness. Only 26 years old, he has age on his side and there can be many teams looking out for him if he can prove himself. Teams like New England, New Orleans, Washington, and also Green Bay and Dallas could be looking out for him. However a stint with the Denver Broncos looks certain . Broncos’ best pass rusher Robert Ayers is injured and will not be available for 2-3 months with a broken foot, while pass-rushing star Elvis Dumervil’s season is over. At this time, Merriman in healthy condition would be the best possible solution for the Broncos’ pass rush problems.
