Similac recall has been initiated by Abbot Laboratories because of fear that the best selling infant formula could be containing insect parts. The contamination affects millions of containers, sold in Guam, Puerto Rico, U.S. and other Caribbean nations. The insect in question is larvae of a small beetle known to cause digestion and acute stomach ache problems. However, other abbot-brands, such as liquid formulas are not affected. The insects were uncovered in Sturgis, Michigan, in the manufacturing section. Abbot Laboratories’ Melissa Brotz clarified that, they “immediately shut down one area and began an investigation” and are currently resolving the situation. Similac is manufactured by Abbot in the United States at several places. According to Abbot, there is nothing so far to worry about after consultation with the Food and Drug Administration, where it was ascertained the contamination is not an “immediate health risk” yet. Similac Consumers have been urged to enter their container lot numbers online to know if the Similac recall affects them. The affected Similac products were released in different sizes of plastic containers that include 366, 352 and 227 grams. In case the container is contaminated, Abbot is giving full refunds, as Brotz insists that they “will do whatever is necessary to maintain the trust of parents in the coming weeks.” The Similac recall has seen Abbot Laboratories shares fall by 16 cents. The formula is a best selling nutritional product for infants as well as the adult formula, Ensure. Sales of the product last year was a whooping $5.3 billion. Image Credit: |
