Stem cell research has this year made ground-breaking discoveries on the positive treatment of conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Stem Cells Could Offer Elusive Treatments This medical advancement called, cellular programming, induces human cells to transform into the type of cells which are created by human embryos. They are harvested by the embryos grown in labs as they have the potential to grow into any type of cell within the body. According to scientists, these stem cells can even become repair tissue which can be used in the treatment of a wide range of diseases. In addition, this type of stem cells does not need to be generated because it is possible for adult cells to be obtained from the human cells. This notion was first experimented on patients suffering from spinal cord injuries so as to ascertain whether any harmful side-effects were present. Cloning is a possibility in the use of stem cells but if restricted by government, it can be prevented. The other issue that raises the matter of ethics is the requirement of human cells that can be obtained from left-over fertility clinic embryos. Strict guidelines govern the use of Vitro cells and in any case stem production is not allowed to develop human cells for the repair of organs. Commercial and financial transactions are also disallowed during the carrying out of this research. However, the flip side of this breakthrough would be the eruption of a debate on whether or not the act is moral or not. Also people may seek to make a profit through the sale of human embryos. |
