Stephen Colbert Testifies Before House Judiciary Subcommittee

Stephen Colbert of Comedy CentraL appeared before a hearing of the House Judiciary subcommittee, regarding working in some of America’s farm fields. In his testimony, Colbert was ready to discuss the “complicated issue” since he had “vast experience spending one day as a migrant farm worker” and was very happy to use his “celebrity” status “to draw attention” to the issue. Colbert Report The comedian was appearing among other 16 individuals to participate in a campaign courtesy of UFW dubbed “Take Our Jobs”, launched as a challenge this summer to many Americans to roll up their sleeves and replace the overwhelming immigrant’s work force in the farms. However, Colbert turned segments from the experience into his “Colbert Report” show in Comedy Central, starring as news anchor in a mock-conservative sort of way, out to get “truthiness” of the news. Stephen Colbert appeared in a gathering swarmed by photographs and listened to directives in terms of behavior from Zoe Longfren, the Chairperson of the committee. Colbert delivered his remarks maintaining his acquired public mock persona but delving into serious issues regarding migrant workers. At one point, he joked that “I don’t want a tomato picked by a Mexican. I want it picked by an American. And sliced by a Guatemalan, and served by a Venezuelan, in a spa, where a Chilean gives me a Brazilian.” Stephen Colbert however went ahead to state in a serious tone the kind of plight America’s laborers were going through, claiming that “migrant workers suffer and have no rights.” Image Credit: |
