Sweetest day is celebrated principally in parts of the Great Lakes and the North eastern region of the United States. Some people are of the opinion that this is just another stupid excuse to get a holiday. Also this is an effort by the candy industries to sell more number of candies, chocolates. Thus, this day can be looked upon to be extremely beneficial for business stores. People like to buy gifts for the one they love. Though this day is not as important as Valentine’s Day, still it remains an occasion where people buy sweets for their wives and family It has been a long time since efforts have been made to establish this day as an official holiday but this has not yet been successful. This day was founded around 1922 by Herbert Birch Kingston in Cleveland, Ohio who was an employee of the local candy company. He did this for the not-so-fortunate denizens of his city. Thus, with the help of film stars, Ann Pennington and Theda Bara, he accumulated loads of chocolates and then delivered them in orphanages and hospitals in Cleveland. However, today Sweetest Day has evolved more like a romantic holiday with exchange of cards, presents followed by a dinner for two. |
