Prickly WeedThe use of Fertilizer is very common in order to help plants have enough nutrients to grow. However, the use of it can be a way to prevent certain weeds from being a nuisance according to some studies that have taken place. In Australia the weed called lovegrass is very common and it grows out of control in no time at all.

According to Dr. Jennifer Firn, a small amount of fertilizer can be added to the lovegrass. By doing so many animals that graze will find it to be very tasty. Not only does it take care of the weed problem, it helps to reduce overgrazing on other types of native grasses as well. The findings of Firn have been published recently in the Journal of Applied Ecology.

The fact that Australia residents spend about $1.4 billion annually in order to control lovegrass and other weeds, this is a terrific finding. The fact that it will also reduce the amount of people using harmful chemicals called pesticides to get rid of the weeds also has plenty of benefits for the environment.

One of the warnings that Firn puts out there though is that this may not be the ultimate solution. She warns that even though adding fertilizer can eliminate lovegrass, it could promote other forms of weeds growing. Still, her solution is one that is deemed worth trying and also an affordable method of gaining some control over this troublesome weed problem.
