Veterans Day, previously known as Armistice Day, is set to arrive on November 11. This day established in 1919,now serves to commemorate the veterans who fought heroically in World War I. over time, Veterans Day accrued a greater significance for all war veterans. In 1953, a few years after World War II ended, which the United States had decisively entered into, there was a widespread campaign to make Armistice Day a holiday in memory of all veterans. President Eisenhower obliged in 1954 when he signed this holiday making it into law. War veterans living with their families or in assisted living facilities mark it as as a red letter day. They relive their glorious days and grieve for friends they lost on the battlefields. As Tennyson had said,” theirs not to make reason why”, theirs but to do or die. But the lost generation who lost a decade of their lives in the 2 world wars may well ask why their lives were blighted. The claims that the past makes on us cannot be settled so easily. For younger people to whom this is just another holiday, now is the time to delve into the rich history of our country and see how the nation came up with the sweat ,blood and tears of our forebears. In the light of this, the 60s held much wisdom with their “make love, not war” placards. Image Credit: |
