Trucks have outsold cars by the widest of margins for the first time in five years.
According to statistics in 2010, more trucks were sold over cars. Cars and trucks have been outselling each other for the past five years and 2010 has the widest margin. The most preferred ones are the light duty types and have a variety of vehicles.

SUVs: Trucks Outsell Cars this Year

The varieties include minivans SUVs and rossovers. They exclude freights for business that are tractor-trailed. That category is referred to as heavy commercial vehicles.

Light duty trucks weigh between 4,000 pounds and 8,500 pounds. They are commonly used to transport large families, haul boats and trailers for off-road driving. Many of them and utility vehicles have one thing in common; they get a few miles to gallon than the passenger cars.

In the 1990s passenger cars dominated vehicle sales until late that decade when sport utility vehicles rose. Trucks and SUV sales have taken a giant share of the U.S. vehicle market in the past few years; this was to be curtailed by the rise in fuel prices making many car shoppers begin to consider having cars.

Despite there being high truck sales in the month of October, cars have still managed to outsell their competitors in the first 10 months of the year.
