Soccer eventWith a perfect goal disallowed last week and another one Wednesday, with England winning the other match of the Group C, against Slovenia, the United States was just minutes away from elimination. The Algerian goalkeeper Rais Mbolhi made several sterling saves but missed Donovan’s final try, who saved the American’s hope with his last-minute goal, giving the U.S. a 1-0 victory over Algeria at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria and first place in Group C.

Last time when U.S. won a group was 80 years ago, in 1930. It is also the fourth time the United States has made it to the second round of the World Cup (1930, 1994, 2002). With his fourth World Cup goal, Donovan tied Bert Patenaude (1930) as the American leader.

Even if you’re not a soccer fan, the work ethic, the determination and undying spirit of the U.S. soccer team has to warm hearts. Former President Bill Clinton lingered in the locker room after the game to congratulate the players. U.S. Coach Bob Bradley said: “We’re proud… Five points and didn’t lose a match… we’re ready.”

United States May Have Fallen into Perfect Spot to Advance. In the Round of 16, the United States must beat Ghana and then will take on the winner of Uruguay vs upstart South Korea.

England is the other team to advance out of group after they beat Slovenia 1-0 and assured themselves the second place in Group C. They will face Germany in the final 16 of the World Cup.
