![]() SERBIAN SUNSET The U.N. general Assembly has taken a resolution which has called for talks between Serbia and Kosovo on a bipartite level. Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia in the year 2008. From the very beginning, Serbia has refused the recognition of an independent Kosovo and the landmark resolution on Thursday can open the gates of talks between the two fighting nations. Once talks start between Pristina and Belgrade, Serbia had planned to start questioning independence of Kosovo, but there was intense pressure from European Union to make a compromise text. The EU in turn has agreed to foster the talks between the two parties and urged Serbia and Kosovo join the league of European Union. Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic has mentioned that he feels that the UN resolution will create a peaceful atmosphere for talks between the Serbs and the Albanians. But he has also clearly stated that Serbia will never recognize the unilateral decision of independence of Kosovo. When Jeremic saw Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu in the assembly hall, he held up the debate for two hours as he said that Fatmir was not from a sovereign state and he must not be allowed in the assembly hall. But the assembly President told that Kosovo leaders have come here as guests of France, Germany, Britain, USA and Italy. Kosovo is recognized by 70 countries which include the USA and 22 of the 27 EU members. On the other hand, Serbia is backed by Russia. Image Credit: |
