US Apologizes on 23 Sept Chopper Raid in Pakistan After Investigation

Anne Patterson, an envoy of the United States to Pakistan expressed the apologies, with General Petraeus of NATO vowing that he will make sure no such similar incidents have taken place at any other time.

NATO did admit that two of its choppers had made their way in the Pakistan airspace, while the crew believed some border guards of Pakistan were militants to whom they opened fire.

The attack took place on the 30 of September and has led to an infuriated and angry public response in Pakistan, leading to scores of Anti-NATO open demonstrations.

The government however closed a specific border crossing to Afghanistan that is usually used by the forces belonging to NATO a day after the said attack with no explanation for that move offered.

The closing of the border has brought traffic jams and long queues, with militants taking the opportunity to carry out attacks on NATO fuel tankers as they head to the NATO bases.

Initially, NATO claimed the chopper attack was carried within its engagement rules but after ISAF, Afghan International Security and Assistance Force of NATO had completed and published its investigations, NATO gave the apology statement.

Ms Patterson said the act was really a “terrible accident” claiming that her apology was being given on behalf of the United States citizens.
