Hillary Clinton was not able to get Brazil’s support for additional sanctions against Iran. Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the Brazilian President, mentioned even before meeting Clinton that it is not the best idea “to push Iran into a corner.” On the other side, Clinton said that Iran will negotiate in good faith only after the sanctions are passed in the Security Council. Clinton mentioned that the United States considered sanctions as the best way to keep the peace and stability, avoiding arms races that could disturb the security process in the world. As long as Russia and China hold veto power over any U.N. resolution, the interest is now focused on them because the initial plan of United States was to present a united front, including members like Brazil and Turkey among the committed coalition of France, Britain and Germany for additional sanctions. Brazilia considers there is room for 2-3 months of additional negotiation with Tehran. Clinton indicated her disappointment saying that the door for negotiation is open, but no one is walking toward it, and she urged nations to remain cautious about Tehran’s guarantees. |
