Human eyeThere are studies being conducted that may introduce a technique for restoring vision to burn victims. In such instances the cornea has been burned. However, a graft consisting of healthy stem cells can be grown in a lab setting. Many experts refer to it as a biological contact lens. The technique is believed to work extremely well and that is exciting news.

In order to have good vision, a person needs the cornea to be clear. Think of it like a window that is clean versus one that is covered in mud. While the cornea is very important it is also very vulnerable. When a person suffers from severe burns they can lose their vision. There are many scenarios that can cause it include explosions and spills.

If the burns are very deep then the cornea can be severely damage. A progressive type of Glaucoma can develop and that causes the vision to be lost progressively. The new stem cell treatment is one of the few options that people have. In the past the procedure has involved taking healthy stem cells for the other eye if only one was affected due to burns.

According to the study results, 77% of patients have been able to successfully regain their sight with this new procedure. Another 13% have been able to see a partial benefit to their vision. The other 10% didn’t see any results at all but the overall results of the study are definitely worth moving forward with such a procedure.
